Green Sanctuary Sunday at First Parish

Sunday, April 13 – Featuring Guest Speaker Miles Howard

Hosted by: First Parish’s Green Sanctuary Team, the sustainability branch of the Social Justice Committee

đź’š What is the Green Sanctuary Program?

First Parish in Bridgewater is a UU-accredited Green Sanctuary, committed to living out our Seventh Principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Through sustainable practices and environmental activism, we strive to be caretakers of the Earth—within our church and beyond.
Some of our current practices include:

  • Cloth napkins, towels, reusable dishware, and eco-friendly cleaning supplies
  • Green electricity (solar farm) and energy-efficient lighting
  • Projection of hymns and readings to reduce paper waste
  • Annual community metal recycling drive with proceeds benefitting the Bridgewater Food Pantry
  • Our Kids to Camp project, which sends local children to NRT Sheep Pasture Nature Camp
  • Little Free Library on the church grounds

First Parish was recognized as an Accredited Green Sanctuary in 2010, and we proudly renew our commitment each year.

🥾 About Our Speaker: Miles Howard

Journalist. Trail Creator. Urban Explorer.

Miles Howard is the founder of Boston’s Walking City Trail, a 27-mile hiking route connecting public parks, forests, and neighborhoods across the city. His innovative approach to “Instant Urban Trail Planning” highlights hidden connections between green spaces—and inspires others to build similar trails in cities everywhere.

Miles’ work has been featured in NPR, Outside Magazine, The Boston Globe, and more. He offers guided urban hikes, writes the newsletter Mind the Moss, and advocates for equitable access to the outdoors.

“Urban trails activate underused spaces, bring new energy to communities, and inspire people to fall in love with where they live.”
