Worship with Rev. Jennifer Johnson, “Being Good Descendants” – Two decades after launching the first successful polio vaccine, virologist Jonas Salk challenged his twentieth-century contemporaries with, what he called, the most important question humans can ask ourselves: “Are we being good ancestors?” In light of climate change, growing political unrest, and the current global pandemic, his question is as urgent now as ever.
Equally compelling, in my view, is a related question: “Are we being good descendants?” What do the triumphs and failings of generations past teach us about how we got where we are? What is our responsibility to them as we strive to live with moral courage in the present and build the beloved community for generations to come?
